Heineken: Good Time Quest

‘This is all about good times, we think we’ve made the best times with this scavenger hunt.’

The background

Heineken wanted to celebrate 150 years of the green iconic bottle with a red star. So we created a game in augmented reality that sent people on the hunt for epic prizes, like tickets to Coachella and the French F1 Grand Prix.

The execution

Good Time Quest is the first-ever global scavenger hunt powered by AR. Users explore the webAR map and look for Heineken-themed objects, collect them, and earn points —which they can pool with up to three friends — to win prizes. If they find our specially placed gold shiny tokens, they unlock a mini AR game to either battle bottles or solve a picture puzzle.

The scavenger hunt is driven by Foursquare data, turning every landmark in a user’s surroundings into a spawn point for tokens that give them points. Our team used the 8th Wall to power the webAR game, let users explore the map, and play the mini-games hidden within the main scavenger hunt.

We built a fully custom CMS to support the scavenger hunt in multiple countries and on multiple setups. This gave each region that Heineken serves an unprecedented amount of control in curating the Quest to fit their market.

The results

Heineken wanted Good Time Quest to be one thing above all else: fun. And our collaboration was just that. The brand didn’t take itself too seriously, leaning into how “Heineken” is often misspelled around the world. We created something that’s never been done before and gave Heineken fans exactly what they love: something fun to enjoy with friends.
